Medusa Door Knocker

Sculpture created in collaboration with the Pictou County Women Resource and Sexual Assault Centre to honour and celebrate 50 years of women making change in Pictou County.

Medusa and door knocker symbolism speaks to the historic milestone.

Medusa is a survivor,

she is a protector,

She refuses to be silenced,

She has reclaimed her gaze.

The door knocker is a nod to the beginning of the local women’s movement when conversations started by women knocking on doors.

Several women from the centre made impressions in the clay with objects of significance, these marks now live in the handle of the door knocker.

The feathers in the wings were pinched into shape by their hands, now Medusa’ wings hold her maker's finger prints.

power of clay

Clay as a medium not only witnesses our stories, it holds them in the material itself and preserves them through time.
