Terra Sigillata

Terra Sigillata literally translates to earth seal. The reference comes from Roman ware with its raised embossed patterns and waxy red/orange surface, looked like the wax seal that would close an official document, hence earth seal.

Terra Sigillata is made by mixing dry clay with water and allowing the heavy particles to settle. The middle region is the terra sigillata. Colours are added with oxides and stains.
